Book review:Dear Ijeawele, or A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Posted on August 25, 2019 by soumya.bharathi@gmail.com

Feminism is a very often a highly misunderstood/ misused term or concept. In this very well written book Adichie takes the core idea behind feminism ( equality of sexes)as the basis and throws light on what we can do as parents to inculcate these values in our children so that they accept it as a way of life rather than as a vague concept. And she does this in concise way( the book is so short I finished it entirely in a couple of hours between appointments), just enumerating the basic ideas in a nutshell. Even though some may seem like common sense I was so amazed by her clarity of thought. I like underlining the lines that I liked in any book and this one has one such great line in almost every single page. This is Adichie\’s first book that I have read and I am already waiting to read more of her work.
This is a must read if you are a parent who wants to have gender neutral upbringing for your child..

Here is an excerpt:

We do not condition boys to aspire to marriage, and so there is already a terrible imbalance at the start. The girls will grow up to be women preoccupied with marriage. The boys will grow up to be men who are not preoccupied with marriage. The women marry those men. The relationship is automatically uneven because the institution matters more to one than the other. Is it any wonder that, in so many marriages, women sacrifice more, at a loss to themselves, because they have to constantly maintain an uneven exchange?
