Mother Earth\’s Wild Child

Posted on August 22, 2019 by Soumya Bharathi

A billion years ago in time,

Mother earth was in her prime; Her womb was so nourishing and fertile,

From it sprang life diverse with every mile..

The snow capped mountains stood tall in glory;

The depths of the oceans told a different story..

From it’s waters emerged new life,

Budding and blooming, bereft of any strife…

The soil and sun worked in synergy,

Filling the mother’s womb with life energy…

As seed sprouted and grew to become tree,

Mother earth went on a creation spree..

Soon thick forests covered the land,

As flora and fauna flourished under her nurturing hand;

The fish swam and peacocks danced in rain,

Frogs hopped and birds ate their grain..

The deer grazed as the lions sprang on their bait,

And turtles travelled far searching for their mate..

All her children went about their assigned duty;

But mother sighed as none understood her exquisite beauty..

So she created “Human” with precision and diligence,

Endowing him with the power of intelligence…

As she played him her creation\’s unique song,

All she wanted from him was to listen and sing along..

This child of hers whom she fashioned to be mild,

Soon turned out to be her wild child..

He used his unique gift of thought,

To conquer everything that he sought..

He cut trees and used up all resources,

With his wastes, he polluted water at sources;

He burnt fuel excessively in all forms,

And meddled continuously with nature’s norms…

As mother earth watched in horror,

Man spread on her soil, hatred and terror…

He killed flora and fauna for his use,

She watched regretfully as all her other children suffered abuse..

As man slowly morphed into enfant terrible,

His self- obsessed ways become unbearable..

In causing destruction, as he became adept,

The generous mother\’s heart wept..

With his selfish motives on overdrive,

All plants and animals struggled to thrive..

As man repeatedly crossed the line, without being sorry,

He didn’t stop even with his mother’s fury..

She punished him with floods, quakes, hurricane,

For his intelligence, from a boon had become a bane..

Will this wild child of hers ever learn a lesson?

When will he put a full stop to senseless destruction??

He thinks he is the master of Universe,

But this gigantic ego of his is just a curse…

For in this infinitely vast creation he is just a tiny speck,

And he and his clan of humans need this reality check..

It is about time he mended his ways and reconciled,

Otherwise a mother knows how to teach her wild child..

    Absolutely lovely! How accurately you’ve expressed the horrors man is unfolding upon Mother Earth. Just when I thought I have found my favorite lines, upon reading a little further, I’d find more favorites. I think the truth is every sentence you wrote, with such perfect rhyming, which is not easy in a subject like this. Besides for a poem which has taken everything into account, and with continuity and consistency, your skill with words shows total command over your subject matter.
    This is such an important poem, especially in times such as now, where climate change is showing it’s ugliest side! Thanks so much for this lovely thought provoking read.
